“Technology can have a transformative effect on transport and infrastructure, and the opportunities provided by data are vast. With around 25,000 more people expected to call Lake Macquarie home over the next 20 years, taking the City’s population to around a quarter of a million people, we need your ideas at LakeMacHack to help tackle the region’s current and future transport challenges.” Brooke Humphries, Chief Information Officer, Lake Macquarie City Council
LakeMacHack was designed to activate digital innovation and business venture skills across the Lake Macquarie community. Talented local teams doubled down on key local transport challenges that needed some applied thinking, innovation skills and fresh approaches. Event challenge topics of Transport + Connectivity in Land, Sea+ Air focussed the efforts of local Hackers, Hustlers and Hipsters on 16-17June2017
It was an immersive event for all involved, in a compressed challenge to deliver first generation concepts and prototypes in a deep-dive learning experience that balances teamwork, time management, business-savvy and digital collaboration skills to create new possibilities for our region.
We provided event attendees with exposure to leading collaboration tools from Atlassian, Industrial IOT platforms from Thinxtra and NNNCo, location services from Here Technologies, DataSets + Mentors for the Challenge Topics to give access to emerging tech and see what teams could do.
Many hackathons rely on Face to Face attendance - our event was designed to interact with regional participants using a remote engagement model to support the needs of our lake based communities and surrounding areas. This helps the public to engage with teams, give feedback on their ideas as they shape them and give them a boost for their Challenge entry. Entrants competed for a $10000 prize pool of cash and business catalyst service prizes from our Sponsors and event support partners from our region.

LakeMacHack was a multifaceted learning experience, enabling me to not just compete, but mingle with other startups and entrepreneurs, gain a data-centric understanding of previously unknown industries, and develop a deeper understanding of the startup ecosystem within Newcastle

What's a Here map look like?
We've been road testing the Here App in the lead to our event and are super impressed by the functionality of their platform. Want to get an idea of what their maps like like? Here's one, showing our event venue. If you're curious about using it on the move, grab the App and give it a go.
